Zero-balance savings accounts in India, compared
Minimum balance, debit card fee, interest rate and how long the KYC actually takes — with the catch on each one, because every single one of them has a catch.
“Zero balance” almost never means zero cost. It means the charge moved somewhere else — a monthly plan fee, a debit card fee, or an interest rate that only applies above a balance you don’t hold. One account on this list is genuinely free to keep open. Another costs about ₹2,200 a year.
The table below puts the actual cost of each one in the same place, in the same units.
Don't pick one on the interest rate
After the RBI's repo cuts through 2025, most large banks trimmed savings rates to around 2.5%. The 6–7% numbers still being advertised come almost entirely from small finance banks and apply only above balance thresholds most people never reach — and the difference between 2.5% and 4% on a ₹25,000 balance is about ₹375 a year, which one debit card fee erases.
On a normal balance, the fees decide this, not the rate. That's why the table above leads with cost.
Before you start, have these ready
Every one of these accounts is opened by video KYC. It takes about 10 minutes if you're prepared, and fails if you're not.
- PAN card — the physical card or a clear photo
- Aadhaar with the mobile number currently linked to it (the OTP goes there)
- Good daylight and a quiet spot — video KYC is a live call with an agent
- A blank sheet and a pen — most banks ask for a signature on camera
- 10 uninterrupted minutes — the call cannot be paused and restarting means re-queueing
Who should not bother
If your salary is already credited to an account with no minimum-balance problem, switching gains you very little. These accounts are worth opening if you're currently paying non-maintenance charges, want a second account for online spending, or need an account opened without visiting a branch.
One thing that is not a differentiator, despite how often it's used as one: deposit insurance. Every bank here is RBI-licensed and DICGC-insured up to ₹5 lakh — the small finance banks included. That is not a reason to pick one over another.
